Level 4 diploma or HNC: what is the difference?

How a Level 4 diploma compares with an HNC on level, credits, funding, recognition and subject range, from an adviser who has placed people on both routes.

People who ask us this question usually have two tabs open: one for a Higher National Certificate at a local college, one for a Level 4 diploma on this site. Both are pitched at the level of a first undergraduate year, both are worth 120 credits, and both are assessed mostly by coursework. The differences are real, though, and they are about who awards the qualification, how it is funded, which subjects it exists in and how employers in a given trade read it.

Same level, same size

On the Regulated Qualifications Framework an HNC and a Level 4 diploma occupy the same rung. Each carries 120 credits, each expects around 1,200 hours of total learning, and each is listed on the Ofqual register at register.ofqual.gov.uk with a number you can look up. If a university or employer tells you one is "higher" than the other, they are mistaken about the framework, whatever they may think about the content.

Who awards them

The HNC is a Pearson BTEC brand, and most HNCs in England are Pearson qualifications delivered by further education colleges. A Level 4 diploma on this site is awarded by OTHM or Qualifi, two Ofqual-regulated awarding organisations, and delivered by approved centres such as LSPM, the centre this site recruits for. That is a difference of brand and of history rather than of regulation: all three bodies answer to the same regulator and are held to the same conditions.

The practical effect is recognition. The HNC has been around for decades, and in engineering, construction and the built environment it is a known quantity that hiring managers grew up with. OTHM and Qualifi diplomas are younger and are better known in business, care, computing and hospitality than in the technical trades. Ask yourself which employers you want to impress, then ask a few of them.

Funding

This is the difference that decides the question for many people. An HNC delivered by a registered provider is usually eligible for a tuition fee loan through the student finance system. The OTHM and Qualifi diplomas described on this site are not currently designated for that funding, so the fee is paid by you or your employer. LSPM's fees and payment options are explained on the fees page, and the honest position is that an HNC with a loan may well be cheaper at the point of study, while a diploma paid over the year avoids a debt that follows you.

Subjects

The HNC catalogue is strong in engineering disciplines, construction, computing, business and health-related subjects. The OTHM and Qualifi Level 4 catalogue overlaps on business, computing and health and social care, and then goes where the HNC does not: law, psychology, coaching, aviation management, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, early childhood education. If your subject only exists in one of the two families, the decision is made for you.

Study pattern

HNCs are usually taught in a college building, one or two days a week, over a year or two, with a fixed academic calendar. Level 4 diplomas from approved centres are more often delivered in the evening, online or in a blend, with more than one start point in a year. Neither pattern is better; the one that fits your life is the one you will finish.

How universities treat them

Both qualifications can support an application to join the second year of a matching degree, and in both cases the university decides. HNC holders have a longer track record of moving into year two of a matching degree, particularly where a college has a standing agreement with a local university. OTHM and Qualifi diploma holders apply for recognition of prior learning in the same way and are treated on the merits of the specification. We cannot promise an outcome for either route and neither can anyone else.

My view

Choose the HNC if you work in engineering or construction, if the loan matters to you, or if your local college teaches your subject well and you can attend in the day. Choose a Level 4 diploma if your subject is not in the HNC catalogue, if you need evening or online delivery, or if your plan is to continue to Level 5 and Level 6 within the same awarding body's structure rather than transfer to a university. Whichever you pick, look up the qualification number on the Ofqual register before you pay anyone anything.
