Is a Level 4 diploma a degree?

Where Level 4 sits on the UK qualification framework, what it is equivalent to, and what it is not, explained by an adviser who has spent years placing people on them.

No. A Level 4 diploma is not a degree, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. But the honest answer is more useful than the short one, because Level 4 is pitched at exactly the height of a first undergraduate year, and that fact has consequences worth understanding.

Where Level 4 sits

The Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) in England places qualifications on levels from Entry to 8. A levels are Level 3. A bachelor's degree with honours is Level 6. A master's is Level 7. The first year of a bachelor's degree is pitched at Level 4, the second at Level 5, the final at Level 6.

A Level 4 diploma of 120 credits therefore covers the same volume of learning, at the same intellectual demand, as a first undergraduate year. The Ofqual register lists each one with its level and credit value, and you can check any programme on this site against it.

What "equivalent" means and does not mean

Equivalent in level and size is not the same as interchangeable. A degree is awarded by a university with degree-awarding powers. A Level 4 diploma is awarded by an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation such as OTHM or Qualifi. The diploma is a complete qualification in its own right, and a certificate is issued when you finish it. It is not one third of a degree certificate.

What it can do is let you apply to a university for entry to the second year of a related degree. Universities call this advanced standing, or recognition of prior learning. Each university decides for itself whether to grant it, and for which programmes. Some do so routinely for OTHM and Qualifi diplomas; some assess case by case; some do not. We tell every applicant this before they apply, because the people who are disappointed later are always the ones who were told it was automatic.

Does it carry UCAS points?

No. UCAS Tariff points attach to Level 3 qualifications used for entry to the first year of university. A Level 4 diploma is above that line, so it has no tariff value. If you want first-year entry through UCAS, a Level 3 qualification is what you need; if you already hold a Level 4 diploma, you apply to the university directly for advanced entry rather than through the tariff.

Who should take one instead of a degree year

Three groups, in our experience. People in work who cannot take a year off but can study 20 hours a week. People who left school without A levels and have since built a career, for whom the mature-entry route into Level 4 is a realistic door. And people who are not yet sure a full degree is for them, and want a year's worth of study that is a qualification in itself if they stop there.

The straight comparison

Level 4 diploma First year of a degree
Level on the RQF 4 4
Credits 120 120
Awarded by Ofqual-regulated awarding body University
Certificate at the end Yes, a complete qualification No, until the full degree
Typical cost Set by LSPM, the approved centre; see the fees page Tuition fee set by the university
Student loan Not currently for these diplomas Yes
Leads to Level 5, or advanced entry at a university's discretion Year two of the same degree

If you are weighing the two, the fees page and the entry requirements page on this site will give you the facts we know, and an enquiry will get you our view on your particular case.
