In brief

What you are signing up for

Fundamentals of Education and Training starts the year with how adults learn and what a trainer is for. Design of Education and Training Resources follows, and it is the unit learners remember, because you build materials you will actually use. Engaging Learners deals with the room itself, Developing a Work Plan with the organisation around it, Programme Evaluation in Education and Training with evidence, and Professional Development and Reflective Practice with you.

Compared with the OTHM Education and Training Management diploma, which has near-identical unit headings, the Qualifi programme leans slightly more towards the making of resources and slightly less towards managing other people's work. Qualifi does not publish per-unit credits in the material we hold; the diploma is 120 credits in total. The people we have advised onto it mix FE lecturers on fractional contracts, NHS and care-sector trainers, and people in industry who deliver compliance or systems training. None of them leaves with teacher status, because no Level 4 diploma confers it, but all of them leave with a designed, delivered and evaluated programme in their portfolio.

The six units

  1. Fundamentals of Education and Training
  2. Design of Education and Training Resources
  3. Engaging Learners
  4. Developing a Work Plan
  5. Programme Evaluation in Education and Training
  6. Professional Development and Reflective Practice
six mandatory units, no optional units 120 credits

Unit titles and credit values are taken from the Qualifi qualification specification. The order in which LSPM teaches them is set by LSPM and confirmed at enrolment.

Fundamentals, then design and engagement as a pair, then the work plan, then evaluation and reflection together at the end is the logical run, and the resource you design in unit two is the one you deliver and evaluate later. LSPM confirms the sequence it uses.

Entry

Entry requirements

Qualifi sets the entry requirements for this qualification and LSPM, as the approved centre, applies them when it assesses your application. As published by the awarding body:

  • Approved Centres are responsible for reviewing and making decisions as to the applicant’s ability to complete the learning programme successfully and meet the demands of the qualification.
  • The initial assessment by the centre, will need to consider the support that is readily available or can be made available to meet individual learner needs as appropriate. The qualification has been designed to be accessible without artificial barriers that restrict access, for this qualification applicants must be aged 18 or over.
  • It is envisaged that learners entering the Level 4 Diploma will have a Level 3 qualification.
  • Learners entering the Level 5 Diploma will have a Level 4 qualification. In the case of applicants whose first language is not English, then IELTS 6 (or equivalent) is required.
  • International qualifications will be checked for appropriate enrolment to UK higher education postgraduate programmes where applicable.
  • The applicants are normally required to produce two supporting references, at least one of which should preferably be academic.

Source: the Qualifi specification. If you are not sure whether your qualification counts as equivalent, send us the details and we will put the question to LSPM's admissions team, who make the decision.

Qualifi expects entrants to be 18 or over and usually to hold a Level 3 qualification, with IELTS 6 or equivalent for those whose first language is not English, and normally two references. LSPM will also want to know that you have learners to teach during the programme.

Assessment

How you are assessed

Assignments for each unit, with the resources you design forming part of the assessed evidence alongside a written rationale. There are no exams; ask LSPM about feedback on drafts.

Assignments are set and marked by LSPM's tutors, moderated within LSPM and sampled by Qualifi before LSPM claims certificates. Draft feedback and resubmission arrangements are LSPM's own practice; confirm them at enrolment. How assessment works in full.

Progression

Where it leads, stated carefully

Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training from Qualifi, which the awarding body positions as the direct next stage.

Application for second-year entry to an education studies or lifelong learning degree, subject to the university's own decision.

Trainer, tutor, assessor-coordinator or learning designer roles where an education qualification is expected.

We do not name partner universities on this page. If and when LSPM shows us a written progression agreement for this diploma, it will be listed here with the date it was signed.

Readership

Who it suits

Likely to get a lot from it

  • Subject experts who have drifted into teaching their subject and want to do it properly.
  • Training staff in health, care and safety roles who design and run statutory sessions.
  • People considering a career move into further or adult education.

Better served by something else

  • Anyone seeking qualified teacher status for schools, which this does not provide.
  • Learners who want the regulated FE teaching qualification specifically; check that route before choosing this.
  • People with no learners to teach, since the design, delivery and evaluation cycle depends on a real audience.
Questions

Asked about this programme

What kind of resource will I design?

Whatever your learners need: a session plan and slides, a workbook, an e-learning module, an induction pack. The unit is judged on fit for purpose and pedagogy, not production values.

How is this different from the OTHM version?

Very similar bones. This Qualifi diploma emphasises resource design and reflective practice; the OTHM one names a management unit about allocating and monitoring work. If your job is mostly designing training, this one; if it is mostly coordinating trainers, the OTHM one.

Can I use it to teach in a college?

Colleges set their own staffing requirements. Many accept a Level 4 in education and training for hourly or associate lecturing while you work towards a higher qualification, but check with the employer.
